Whitebait Connection - Session One - Introduction

Today we had our introduction to the Whitebait Connection as a lead-up to our 'action project'.
We learnt how fresh water is a very precious resource. We looked at freshwater environments and habitats. A wetland is usually on flat ground, often at the bottom of hills before the water enters the sea where it slows down, acting like filters for the water - often referred to as the kidneys of the land.
Wetlands are a very important habitat for many specialised plants and animals. Unfortunately over 90% of our wetlands have been destroyed by reclamation or drainage for development. This water is also affected by pollution.

In relation to this, we also have been learning about the water cycle. When water falls from the sky it starts to collect up in all sorts of places and slowly makes its way out to sea and back up into the sky as evaporation, where it gets filtered and recycled.

We finished with a game called 'The Whitebait Run'. We had a great time!
